Lyrics to the hymn, Wayfaring Stranger
Introduction
Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Wayfaring Stranger by Paul Gerhardt in 1666.*
It is a beautiful song, and I love it; it is one of my favorite hymns.
If you don't know how the tune goes, go find Johnny Cash's version, or Folksandhymns version.
The lady on Folksandhymns, whom I have decided to call Kathy Wilson, does a very good job.
Now, on with the show!
Solar EclipseThe Lyrics
Verse 1
I'm just a poor, wayfaring stranger,
Traveling through this world of woe;
And there's no sickness, toil or danger,
In that bright land to which I go.
I'm going there to see my father,
I'm going there no more to roam;
I'm just a'going over Jordan.
I'm just a'going over home.
Verse 2
I know dark clouds will gather o'er me;
I know my way is rough and steep.
Yet beauteous fields lie just before me,
Where God's redeemed their vigils keep.
I'm going there to see my mother,
She said she'd meet me when I go;
I'm just a'going over Jordan.
I'm just a'going over home.
Verse 3
I want to wear a crown of glory,
When I get home to that good land.
I want to shout salvation's story,
In concert with the blood-washed band.
I'm going there to meet my Savior,
To sing His praise forevermore;
I'm just a'going over Jordan.
I'm just a'going over home.
Afterwards
Isn't it beautiful?
It was actually quite hard finding who wrote it, and when it was written, and I'm not sure that I got it right.
Oh well. Nothing anybody can do about it.
It is considered a folk song as well as a hymn; I prefer it as a hymn.
If there is a particular subject that you want me to cover, let me know down in the comments, and I will do my best to answer you.
