Lyrics to the hymn, Count Your Blessings

Trees

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals.

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Count Your Blessings; John Outman Jr wrote it, and it was published in 1897.

It is about being content with what God has given you, and remembering all of the good things that He has done for us.

If you don't know how the tune goes, look up Folksandhymns on YouTube; listening to this version helped me memorize it.

Now, on with the show!

A fairy-tale like scene

The Lyrics

Verse 1

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Chorus

Count your blessing, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done,

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Verse 2

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,

And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Chorus

Count your blessing, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done,

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Verse 3

When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;

Count your blessings wealth can never buy:

Your reward in Heaven, or your home on high.

Chorus

Count your blessing, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done,

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Verse 4

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,

Do not be disheartened, God is over all;

Count your many blessings, angels will attend,

Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.

Chorus

Count your blessing, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done,

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Afterwards

I really like the 3rd verse.

You can't buy happiness with money; which is why I rent it.

I'm just kidding.

My point is, is that while others have more money, or lands, or houses, we have the promise of a city built of the purest gold, with its gates made of precious stones; and, in addition to that, we will have no sorrows, pain, or hate.

So, when you look at others with their lands and gold, think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold, and count your many, many blessings.
