Lyrics to the hymn, Be Thou My Vision

The sun during a solar eclipse

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the ancient Irish hymn, Be Thou My Vision.

It was translated by Mary E. Byrne and versified by Eleanor H. Hull.

I think that Kaleb Brasee played it, so go check that out on YouTube.

I saw that Audrey Assad sang it, but I never heard her version.

Now, on with the show!

Snow and trees

The Lyrics

Verse 1

Be Thou my vision, o Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.

Thou my best thought, by day or by night;

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Verse 2

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word;

I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord.

Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Verse 3

Be Thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight;

Be Thou my armor, and be Thou my might.

Thou my soul's shelter, Thou my high tower;

Raise Thou me heavenward, oh Pow'r of my pow'r.

Verse 4

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise;

Thou my inheritance, now and always.

Thou, and Thou only, first in my heart;

High King of Heaven, my treasure Thou art.

Verse 5

High King of Heaven, my victory won;

May I reach Heaven's joys, oh bright Heaven's sun.

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, oh ruler of all.

A very pretty house

      Afterwards

Isn't it nice?

I think that a good recording of it would be with some bagpipes, a fiddle or two, some ocarinas, Irish whistle, the Celtic harp, and maybe a bazouki.

Let's go to YouTube and demand that Carrie Underwood sings it this way.

Politely, of course.

A GORGEOUS view of a house and mountains

Afterwards

I send out new content every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and the occasional Random Chatty Day; go to past posts to read more about hymns, instruments, recipes, animals, and... cryptids!

Let me know down in the comments what you thought of today's post.

Goodbye, and God bless.
