Lyrics to the hymn, Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken

Introduction

Hello. I am a Mother of Gooses and a lover of hymns; I consider them to be a work of art. And they bring glory to God, our Creator and Redeemer, and Friend.

A pretty fall day

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken; it was written by John Newton and published in 1779.

Here's some scripture associated with this hymn:

Psalm 87:3

"Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah."

Isaiah 33:20-21

"Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.

But there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby."

Psalm 48:1-14

The Lyrics

Verse 1

Glorious things of Thee are spoken,

Zion, city of our God!

He, whose Word cannot be broken,

Formed thee for His own abode;

On the Rock of Ages founded,

What can shake thy sure repose?

With salvation's walls surrounded,

Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.

Verse 2

See, the streams of living waters,

Springing from eternal love,

Well supply thy sons and daughters,

And all fear of want remove;

Who can faint while such a river

Ever flows their thirst t' assuage?

Grace which, like the Lord, the giver,

Never fails from age to age.

Verse 3

Round each habitation hov'ring,

See the cloud and fire appear,

For a glory and a cov'ring,

Showing that the Lord is near;

Thus deriving from our banner

Light by night and shade by day.

Safe they feed upon the manna,

Which He gives them when they pray.

Verse 4

Blest inhabitants of Zion,

Washed in the Redeemer's blood,

Jesus, whom their souls rely on,

Make them kings and priests to God;

'Tis His love His people raises

Over self to reign as kings,

And as priests, His solemn praises

Each for a thank off'ring brings.

Verse 5

Savior, if of Zion's city,

I through grace a member am,

Let the world deride or pity,

I will glory in Thy Name;

Fading is the worldling's pleasure,

All his boasted pomp and show;

Solid joys and lasting treasure

None but Zion's children know.

The sky

Afterwards

"Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show"

This world is temporary. Do not put your hope in it's pleasures, or you will be severely disappointed.
