Lyrics to the hymn, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

A sunny December morning

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

A snowy field

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, by Edmund H. Sears. It was published in 1849, and is now published in 878 hymnals.

Here's some scripture associated with this hymn:

Luke 2:8-9

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid."

The sky during a total eclipse

The Lyrics

Verse 1

It came upon a midnight clear,

That glorious song of old,

From angels bending near the earth

To touch their harps of gold;

"Peace on the earth, good will to men,

From Heav'n's all gracious King."

The world in solemn stillness lay,

To hear the angels sing.

Verse 2

Still through the cloven skies they come

With peaceful wings unfurled,

And still their heav'nly music floats

O'er all the weary world;

Above it's sad and lonely plains,

They bend on hov'ring wing,

And ever o'er its Babel sounds

The blessed angels sing.

Verse 3

Yet with the woes of sin and strife

The world has suffered long;

Beneath the angel strain have rolled

Two thousand years of wrong;

And man, at war with man, hears not

The love-song which they bring;

Oh, hush the noise, ye men of strife

And hear the angels sing.

Verse 4

And ye, beneath life's crushing load,

Who's forms are bending low,

Who toil along the climbing way

With painful steps and slow,

Look now! For glad and golden hours

Come swiftly in the wing.

Oh, rest beside the weary road,

And hear the angels sing!

Verse 5

For lo! The days are hast'ning on,

By prophets seen of old,

When with the ever-circling years

Shall come the time foretold

When Christ shall come and all shall own

The Prince of Peace, their King,

And saints shall meet him in the air,

And with the angels sing.

A field and a mountain

Afterwards

The third verse is absolutely beautiful; I read it out loud, and I felt like crying.

I can't choose a favorite part of the song; it's all so beautiful.

Well done, Edmund Sears. Thank you. Rest in peace, and with the angels, sing.

A fairly snowy mountain
