Lyrics to the hymn, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

A snowy December morning

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

A snowy field

The Subject At Hand

Today , we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, by Charles Wesley; it was published in 1739, altered and published in 1758 and again in 1767, the first time by George Whitefield and the second time by Martin Madan.

The original version actually started off the line, "Hark! how all the welkin rings!"

When people used the word welkin, they were referring to the sky or the heavens.

I'll leave some links down below to some good versions of this hymn. Here's some scripture associated with it:

Luke 2:13-14

"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.""

Who here likes snowy woods?❤️

The Lyrics

Verse 1

Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King!

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled!"

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

With angelic host proclaim,

"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King!"

Verse 2

Christ by highest Heav'n adored,

Christ the everlasting Lord;

Late in time, behold Him come,

Offspring of a virgin's womb.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

Hail th'incarnate Deity,

Please as man with man to dwell,

Jesus our Emmanuel.

Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King!"

Verse 3

Hail the Heav'n born Prince of Peace,

Hail the Son of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,

Risen with healing in His wings.

Mild He lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die;

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King!"

Verse 4

Come, Desire of nations, come,

Fix in us Thy humble home;

Rise, the woman's conqu'ring Seed,

Bruise in us the serpent's head.

Adam's image now efface,

Stamp Thine image in its place:

Second Adam from above,

Reinstate in us Thy love.

Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King!"

Verse 5

Now display thy saving power,

Ruined nature now restore,

Now in mystic union join

Thine to ours, and ours to thine.

Let us Thee, though lost, regain,

Thee the life, the inner Man;

O! to all Thyself impart,

Form'd in each believing heart.

Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King!"

The moon looks like the star of Bethlehem

Afterwards

"Mild He lays His glory by, born that man no more may die."

That line says so much with few words.

Fun fact:

This song originally had ten verses, (that's how you know Wesley wrote it) but somebody took two verses and combined them to into one, leaving us a song with five verses.

Someday I'll do the original version. It's a lot different from what we are used to singing. I mean, who uses the word welkin? Google thought I spelled wrong.
