Lyrics to the hymn, Higher Ground
Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.
Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Higher Ground. It was written by Johnson Oatman Jr in 1898, and it is now published in 338 hymnals.
If you don't know how the tune goes, I'll leave some links down below.
Now, without further adieu...
Verse 1
I'm pressing on the upward way,
New heights I'm gaining every day;
Still praying as I'm onward bound,
"Lord, plant my feet on higher ground."by
Refrain
Lord, lift me up and let me stand
By faith on Heaven's tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
Verse 2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where those abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
Refrain
Lord, lift me up and let me stand
By faith on Heaven's tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
Verse 3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan's darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
Refrain
Lord, lift me up and let me stand
By faith on Heaven's tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
Verse 4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I'll pray 'til Heav'n I've found,
"Lord, lead me on to higher ground."
Refrain
Lord, lift me up and let me stand
By faith on Heaven's tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
"My heart has no desire to stay where doubts arise and fears dismay."
Amen.
So many people are staying in the ways of the world; LGBTQ, abortion, racism, and so many other things contribute to a place where nobody is truly happy, and where fears run rampant.
I am glad that I have the hope of higher ground.
