Lyrics to the hymn, Peace, Perfect Peace
Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.
Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Peace, Perfect Peace, by Edward H. Bickersteth Jr. He wrote it in 1875, and in it he talks about how Jesus can give us peace and quiet in these crazy times.
And boy, don't we need peace; the 2024 election is coming up, there is war after war, there is divorce, LGBTQ, abortion, and border crossings. And it seems like there will be no end to this nonsense.
But, in the words of Allie Beth Stuckey, "Jesus will win. It may seem like evil is winning, but God's eternal plan of redemption is always going off without a hitch."
Amen. So true.
I first heard this hymn on Olive Tree Hymns I'll leave some links down below.
Now, without further adieu...
Verse 1
Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin?
The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.
Verse 2
Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed?
To do the will of Jesus, this is rest.
Verse 3
Peace, perfect peace, with sorrows surging 'round?
On Jesus' bosom naught but calm is found.
Verse 4
Peace, perfect peace, 'mid suffering's sharpest throes?
The sympathy of Jesus breathes repose.
Verse 5
Peace, perfect peace, with loved ones far away?
In Jesus' keeping we are safe, and they.
Verse 6
Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?
Jesus we know, and He is on the throne.
Verse 7
Peace, perfect peace, death shad'wing us and ours?
Jesus has vanquished death, and all its powers.
Verse 8
It is enough: earth's struggles soon shall cease,
And Jesus calls us to Heaven's perfect peace.
"Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed? To do the will of Jesus, this is rest."
I love that line. Who hasn't felt that way before?
This hymn is what's known as a couplet. A couplet is a poem that has two lines in each stanza.
I can't wait to see Jesus. The peace of heaven will be so nice after the nonsense here on Earth. Thank you, Jesus, for Your promise of Heaven.
I hope that you enjoyed today's post; feel free to share it with your friends and family, and leave a comment.
