Lyrics to the hymn, O Jesus, I Have Promised

A field, mountains, trees, and the blue sky

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, O Jesus, I Have Promised, by John E. Bode; he wrote it in 1869, and it is now published in 625 hymnals.

I first heard this hymn on Olive Tree Hymns; I'll leave some links to their channel and video down below.

Now, without further adieu, let's get going.

The Lyrics

Verse 1

O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end;

Be Thou forever near me, my Master and my Friend;

I shall not fear the battle if Thou art by my side,

Nor wander from the pathway if Thou wilt be my Guide.

Verse 2

O let me feel Thee near me, the world is ever near;

I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear:

My foes are ever near me, around me and within;

But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

Verse 3

O let me hear Thee speaking in accents clear and still

Above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will!

O speak to reassure me, to hasten o'er control;

O speak and make me listen, Thou Guardian of my soul!

Verse 4

O let me see Thy footprints, and in them plant my own;

My hope to follow duly is in Thy strength alone;

O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end;

And then in Heav'n receive me, my Savior and my friend.

Verse 5

O Jesus, Thou hast promised to all who follow Thee

That were Thou art in glory there shall Thy servant be;

And, Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end;

O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

Afterwards

"O let me hear Thee speaking in accents clear and still above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will."

Oh, so true. Have you ever had a time (or five or six) when you just want to freaking scream and throw a fit to get your way? I have. And sometimes the voice of Jesus is so quiet that you just ignore it.

But in the end, nobody is happier for the drama, and nothing is resolved. Which is why we need to dwell on the word of God, and show some self control when we want to give way to the murmurs of self-will.

Lord, help us to hear You better.
