Lyrics to the hymn, Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me

A field and mountains

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

A mountain, sky, clouds, and trees

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Jesus, Savior Pilot Me, by Edward Hopper in 1871; it is a very pretty hymn, and I like how Mr Hopper used the sea to talk about life.

But I'm getting ahead of myself; if you don't know how the tune goes, I'll leave some links down below.

Now, without further adieu...

A beautiful morning

The Lyrics

Verse 1

Jesus, Savior, pilot me,

Over life's tempestuous sea;

Unknown waves before me roll,

Hiding rock and treach'rous shoal;

Chart and compass came from Thee;

Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

Verse 2

As a mother stills her child,

Thou canst hush the ocean wild;

Boist'rous waves obey Thy will

When Thou say'st to them, "Be still!"

Wondrous Sov'reign of the sea,

Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

Verse 3

When at last I near the shore,

And the fearful breakers roar

'Twixt me and the peaceful rest,

Then, while leaning on Thy breast,

May I hear Thee say to me,

"Fear not, I will pilot thee."

Blue skies and green trees. Lame description, but true.

Afterwards

"As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild."

I love that line; and do you see what I mean when I say that Edward Hopper used the ocean for the theme of His hymn? Methinks he was a sailor.

He wasn't, though. He was an artist. Totally different.

Hymns are a work of art; just read the words of a few of them, and you'll see what I mean. They tell such a a story, and give you a feeling of awe. What would worship be like if there were no hymns?

Thank you to the people who put the time into writing the hymns, and thanks be to God for letting them do it.

Cloudy day
