Lyrics to the hymn, Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us, written by Dorothy A. Thrupp in 1836; it's tune was composed by William B. Bradbury in 1859.

It is a very pretty hymn, and references to how Jesus said that He was the Good Shepherd. You can read about that in John 20:1-18.

If you don't know how the tune goes, I'll leave some links to some versions that I like down below.

Now, on with the show!

The Lyrics

Verse 1

Savior, like a shepherd lead us,

Much we need Thy tender care;

In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,

For our use Thy folds prepare.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

Verse 2

We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us,

Be the Guardian of our way;

Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,

Seek us when we go astray.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Hear, O hear us when we pray!

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Hear, O hear us when we pray!

Verse 3

Thou hast promised to receive us,

Poor and sinful though we be;

Thou hast mercy to relieve us,

Grace to cleanse and pow'r to free.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

We will early turn to Thee.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

We will early turn to Thee.

Verse 4

Early let us seek Thy favor,

Early let us do Thy will;

Blessed Lord and only Savior,

With Thy love our bosoms fill.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus!

Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Believe it or not, that's the moon

Afterwards

"Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care."

So true. What can we do without Jesus? He is our shepherd, and we are His lambs. We would be swept away in world's current of sin, if the Good Shepherd wasn't watching over us.

Some people say that if God truly loves them, why does He let them suffer?

I will answer.

It is because He's a good God. Pain, misery, grief, confusion, anger and suffering all help us come closer to God...if we let him help us.

Remember how Jesus said that He was the Good Shepherd? What does a shepherd do when a member of his flock is running off and fooling around and causing trouble?

He breaks that sheep's leg.

He doesn't try to gentle parent obedience into it, and he doesn't put up with it. He breaks a leg, and then carries it (meaning the sheep, not the leg) on his shoulder while the leg heals. Afterwards, the sheep is reliant on the shepherd, and won't run off.

Same with us disobedient human-sheep and Jesus the Shepherd. If we aren't living in Jesus, He might decide to break us by sending trials. Afterwards, we will love Him all the more.

This is personal experience talking, by the way.

About a year ago, I didn't really care about God; I knew the gospel, and I was a "Christian" in the sense, but I didn't really care. Then I had a mental breakdown; I was miserable and uncertain about everything, which was quite crippling. (No pun intended)

God helped me, and now I love Him. I have a hymn blog, for goodness sake.

He broke me, and then healed me.

And I love Him for it.
