Lyrics to the hymn, Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

A bad picture of the moon

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending, by John Cennick, 1752, Charles Wesley in 1758, and Martin Madan in 1760.

Now, folks, I'll give you a fair warning: it is long. A lot longer than what people normally sing. Which you can depend on if Wesley had any part in writing it; he loved to write and write and WRITE.

Actually, people have said that this is not the original version, so Wesley would just be adjusting it.

By the way, I will be doing the original song, just not today.

If you don't know how the tune goes, I'll be leaving some links down at the bottom of the post.

Now, on with the show!

Mountains

The Lyrics

Verse 1

Lo, He comes with clouds descending,

Once for favored sinners slain;

Thousand, thousand saints attending,

Swell the triumph of His train:

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

God appears on Earth to rain.

Verse 2

Every eye shall now behold Him

Robed in dreadful majesty;

Those who set at naught and sold Him,

Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,

Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

Verse 3

Every island, sea, and mountain,

Heav'n and earth, shall flee away;

All who hate Him must, confounded,

Hear the trumpet proclaim the day:

Come to judgement! Come to judgement! Come to judgement!

Come to judgement! Come away!

Verse 4

Now redemption, long expected,

See in solemn pomp appear;

All His saints, by man rejected,

Now shall meet Him in the air:

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

See the day of God appear!

Verse 5

Answer Thine own bride and Spirit,

Hasten, Lord, the general doom!

The new Heav'n and earth t'inherit,

Take Thy pining exiles home:

All creation, all creation, all creation,

Travails! groans! and bids Thee come.

Verse 6

The dear tokens of His passion

Still His dazzling body bears;

Cause of endless exultation

To His ransomed worshippers;

With what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture

Gaze we on those glorious scars!

Verse 7

Yea, Amen! Let all adore Thee,

High on Thine eternal throne;

Savior, take the power and glory,

Claim the kingdom for Thine own;

O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly!

Everlasting God, come down!

A cloudy day

Afterwards

Wow, what a mouthful. "T'inherit." What?! I should've expected it, if Wesley had a part in it.

I really like it, though; it is a gorgeous song, and it has deep theological meaning.

"All His saints, by man rejected, now shall meet Him in the air."

I like that line; I can't wait 'til I meet Jesus in the air.

That will be a scary day for those who don't love Jesus! The judgement on God won't be pretty.
