Lyrics to the hymn, Lead, Kindly Light
Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.
Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Lead, Kindly Light, by John H. Newman in 1833.
If you don't know how the tune goes, I'll leave some links down below.
Now, on with the show!
Verse 1
Lead, kindly Light, amid th' encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on;
The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on;
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene, one step enough for me.
Verse 2
I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path, but now
Lead Thou me on;
I loved the garish day, and spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will; remember not past years.
Verse 3
So long Thy pow'r has blest me, sure it still
Wilt lead me on,
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent 'til
The night is gone;
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
"O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent 'til the night is gone."
That's a pretty line; very poetic.
2024 has been a crazy year; the United States of America's election is coming up, and that in itself is cray-cray. But really, our entire world is a disaster. People are arguing for the right to kill an unborn child, LGBTQ is running rampant, scams, murder, global warming, the price of food, unstable governments, etc.
But amidst the encircling gloom, death, and decay, Jesus wins. He is the way, the truth, and the light. Nobody can come to the Father except through Jesus Christ.
Lead, kindly Light. Our world is in shadows.
