Lyrics to the hymn, The Love Of God

Clouds, trees, and a mountain
Indescribable

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals; I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.

A dirt road

The Subject At Hand

Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, The Love Of God, by Frederick M. Lehman; the author of the third verse is unknown.

I have something down below, which I found while getting ready to write this blog post; I did not write a word of what you will be reading. The credit goes to Timeless Truths Online Library.

Quote:

"Lines similar to verse 3 are found in the Qur’an (18:109 and 31:27) and in Akdamut, an 11th-century Jewish poem. Frederick Lehman tells us that the English rendition included in his song had reportedly “been found penciled on the wall of a patient’s room in an insane asylum after he had been carried to his grave.” While it is only supposition that the man was the one who translated or adapted the words to leave us these well-known lines, if the account is true it shows in any case that he highly esteemed the message."

Trees

Isn't that cool? Kind of sad, though. Imagine being in an asylum. Rest in peace, my friend. May you find rest with Jesus.

If you don't know how the tune goes, go to YouTube and look up Kaleb Brasee or Folksandhymns; I will leave some links down below.

Now, on with the show!

A mountain and a field

The Lyrics

Verse 1

The love of God is greater far

Than tongue or pen can ever tell;

It beyond the highest star,

And reaches to the lowest hell;

The guilty pair, bowed down with care,

God gave His Son to win;

His erring child He reconciled,

And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain

Oh love of God, how rich and pure!

How measureless and strong!

It shall forevermore endure-

The saints' and angels' song.

Verse 2

When hoary time shall pass away,

And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,

When men who here refuse to pray,

On rocks and hills and mountains call,

God's love so sure, shall still endure,

All measureless and strong;

Redeeming grace to Adam's race-

The saints' and angels' song.

Refrain

Oh love of God, how rich and pure!

How measureless and strong!

It shall forevermore endure-

The saints' and angels' song.

Verse 3

Could we with ink the ocean fill,

And were the skies of parchment made,

Were every stalk on Earth a quill,

And every man a scribe by trade;

To write the love of God above

Would drain the ocean dry;

Nor could the scroll contain the whole p,

Though stretched from sky to sky.

Refrain

Oh love of God, how rich and pure!

How measureless and strong!

It shall forevermore endure-

The saints' and angels' song.

A foggy morning

Afterwards

Isn't it beautiful? The third verse is gorgeous; the last verse tends to be the best.

God's love is absolutely amazing; it is deeper than a ocean, wider than a sea, yes this wonderful love is extended to even me.

Me, a wretched sinner.

Jesus came down to earth as a little baby to grow up and die for humanity; how many people do you know who would do that? Would you? Would you die for someone like Adolf Hitler, or Ted Bundy, or Kamala Harris? Would you die for someone like yourself?

I can guess fairly accurately that you wouldn't, and I know that I wouldn't.

But the love of God is so deep and rich and forgiving that He died for us.

All we have to do is accept His gift, take up our crosses and follow Christ; we do not have to go to Hell.

Praise the Lord!
