Lyrics to the hymn, The Battle Hymn Of The Republic
Today we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, The Battle Hymn Of The Republic by Julia W. Howe in 1861.
It has deep theological meaning, and it is powerful; I love it.
Most great hymn writers are men, so it is nice to see a woman who is doing a good job; mind you, I'm not saying that women are terrible songwriters, but the most common names are men. Maybe some women used male pseudonyms?
If you don't know how the tune goes, go to YouTube and look up Kaleb Brasee or Folksandhymns; to save you some time, I'll leave some links down below.
Now, let's read this masterpiece!
Verse 1
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fatal lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Refrain
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
Verse 2
I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
Chorus
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
Verse 3
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgement seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him; be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Refrain
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
Verse 4
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Refrain
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
Verse 5
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal."
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.
Refrain
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
Verse 6
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, His faithful He shall save;
Our God is marching on.
Refrain
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah,!
His truths is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Our God is marching on!
Isn't it great? I really like it, and I have a great deal of respect for Julia Ward Howe. She is a great poet.
I am quite pleased that I have the whole hymn here; if you know me, you know that I take pride in knowing all the lyrics to hymns, and I like to send out good content.
I really like the fourth verse; it describes a beautiful love, and when you say lilies, how can you go wrong?😜
Can you believe that some people say, "As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free" instead of what it's supposed to say?!
That's annoying. Mrs. Howe was trying to get a point across, and it's not wrong to talk about death.
I hope that you enjoyed today's post; feel free to share it with your friends and family, and leave a comment.
I send out new content every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and the occasional Random Chatty Day; go to past posts to read more.
Goodbye, and God bless.
