Lyrics to the hymn, Nearer, My God, to Thee
Introduction
Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write the lyrics to hymn, some recipes, and instruments. I hope that I can answer any questions that you might have.
Today, we are looking at the lyrics to the hymn, Nearer, My God, To Thee; Sarah Flower Adams wrote it in 1841.
There is a very sad story connected to it, so read to the end of the post to find out.
Follow the links I'll leave down below to find the tune.
Now, on with the show!
Verse 1
Nearer, to God to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, "Nearer, my God, to Thee."
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Verse 2
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Verse 3
There let the way appear, steps onto Heav'n;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy giv'n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Verse 4
Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Verse 5
Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I'll fly;
Still all my song shall be, "Nearer, my God, to Thee."
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
Verse 6
There in my Father's home, safe and at rest,
There in my Savior's love, perfectly blest;
Age after to be nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
This is the song that the band was playing when the RMS Titanic sank on April 14th, 1912, killing 1,500 people. Isn't that sad?
I find it very hard to dislike a song that has tragedy connected to it; I only know a couple of hymns that have a sad story; let me know in the comments if you know any others, and I'll put them on the blog.
