Lyrics to the hymn, How Great Thou Art
Hello, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I write about hymns, instruments, recipes, and animals.🙂
Today, we are looking at the hymn, How Great Thou Art, by Carl Gustaf Boberg in 1885* and translated by Stuart H. Hine in 1939.
If you don't know how the tune goes, go to YouTube and look up Carrie Underwood or Alan Jackson.
See you later!
The Lyrics
Verse 1
Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the world's thy hands have made:
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed!
Chorus
Then songs my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Verse 2
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze,
Chorus
Then songs my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Verse 3
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in-
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin!
Chorus
Then songs my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Verse 4
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, "My God, how great Thou art!"
Chorus
Then songs my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Well, what do you think?
I really like Carrie Underwood's version of it; she holds the last few notes so long, it's amazing that she didn't pass out. 😃
Great job, Carrie!👍
*Some people say that Mr. Boberg wrote it in 1886, so I'm not sure what to believe.
